16 Days of Action Opposing Violence Against Women

Picture

Monday 25th November was the beginning of the 16 days of action opposing violence against women. This is to raise awareness and call for changes at an international, national and local level to make women and children safe from abuse.

Currently our window display, shown above, has a cross representing each victim of Femicide in this country.

Additionally..............

Westport Family & Community Resource Centre will host a Lilies Remembrance Ceremony at The Fairgreen end of The Mall on Friday 30th November @ 12.30pm.  The ceremony will mark the International 16 Days of Action Opposing Violence Against Women Campaign and commemorate the 225 women who have died violently in Ireland since records began in 1996. 16 children have also been killed alongside their mothers during this time. The 2018 Women’s Aid, Femicide Watch Report shows that women are more likely to be killed in their own homes and by a man known to them.  In over half of all the resolved cases, women were killed by a current or former boyfriend, partner or husband.   The 16 Days of Action Campaign is an important opportunity to raise awareness and call for changes at an international, national and local level to make women and children safe from abuse. Refreshments served afterwards in the Resource Centre. For further information please call 098-24419.

“Men’s Film Night”

Westport Family Resource Centre will host a film night for men on Wednesday 28th November at 7:30pm.

The documentary film "The Work", will be followed by light refreshments and a discussion on the possibility of establishing a monthly men’s group in Westport.

“The Work” is set inside a single room in Folsom Prison and follows three men from the outside as they participate in a four-day group therapy retreat with level-four convicts. Over the four days, each man in the room takes his turn at delving deep into his past, forcing them to see themselves and other prisoners in unexpected ways.
The event is free but booking is essential as spaces are limited.  To book, please call Westport Family Resource Centre or Peter Devers at 0877989253

16 Days Campaign Opposing Violence Against Women
Thanks to everyone who came to our lilies ritual and balloon release on 3rd December to mark the 16 Days Campaign Opposing Violence Against Women (25th Nov - 10th Dec).
In the lilies ritual, participants read out the names of women who have died violently in Ireland since 1995 and dropped a lily in to the Carrowbeg River in their memory.
The balloon release involved us releasing 20 biodegradable purple and white balloons. For every 4 purple balloons there was 1 white one, to symbolise the 1 in 5 women in Ireland who will suffer domestic abuse in their lifetime.
The ritual was lead by Trish Quigley from Mayo Women's Support Services, who provide support to victims of domestic abuse in Mayo.
