Working For Change

Domestic Violence Network
We are an active member of the Western Region Community Response to Domestic Violence Network. The network is made up of representatives from Family Resource Centres in Mayo and Galway, Mayo Women’s Support Services (women's refuge in Castlebar) and COPE Waterside House (women's refuge in Galway).
The objectives of the Network are influenced by Women’s Aid, Waterside House and Mayo Women’s Support Services. The three main aspects of the role are:
  • To raise awareness, particularly during the 16 Days of Action Opposing Violence Against Women, which takes place from 25th November to 10th December every year
  • Referral to front line services
  • Supporting front line services
The network seeks to combine the expertise of the front line services and a community development approach, which involves:
  • Addressing the issues from a client-centered perspective
  • Developing a human rights approach to the work
  • Addressing the different needs of urban and rural clients

Westport Family & Community Resource Centre plays an active part in the Regional LGBT Network. As a Network we organise events to raise awareness around LGBT issues e.g displays in local libraries around IDAHO Day (International Day Against Homophobia), Pride Week (June), and Social Inclusion Week (October).
We also provide information and advice on National and Regional LGBT support groups.
